Theraw nature of theirearly albums quicklygives way toincreasingly complexcompositions, whilelyrically digging deeperinto the emotionalpsyche. Lavender #/demoversion (Morgan)2:31REVIEW:This interestingcollection by DCC was likefinding lost treasure forthousands of Beach Boysfans. The band hadrecorded these selectionsas part of their firstauditions for the small'Candix' label, but afterthe band broke withCandix, and were signed toCapitol, these originalrecordings were stuffed ina shoebox and later wereassumed lost. REVIEW: Wow - thelast time I heard aboutthis collection must beabout ten years ago, whenauthor Brad Elliott, whohad purchased the rightsfrom the Hite Morganfamily, attempted torelease the complete firstrecording sessions of TheBeach Boys, only to beblocked by The Beach Boysthemselves in a notoriouslawsuit. Despite thefact that Elliott was oneof the Beach Boys mostardent historians, and hadcontributed to many oftheir album releases, thisevent appeared to create astill-irreparable dividebetween them; but now, like the Phoenix, herethese sessions comesagain, on a differentlabel, and with notes byacclaimed author JimMurphy, and containingreportedly every scrap ofthose firstsessions. Releasedby The Beach Boysthemselves on theindependent OmnivoreRecords label, thisdouble-disc set is a dreamfor rock historians andfan-boys who have longyearned to hear these babysteps taken by thepremiere American band, but will bea minor curiosity foreveryone else.
Forthe listener, it'sfascinating to hear theband already haveeverything in place forwhat set them apart fromtheir peers - the uniqueblending of Four Freshmanharmonies, Chuck Berryguitar licks, and Surfculture intertwined in away that had never beenattempted, and yet meshedtogether organically. You can hear thepotential, and admire theband's consistency as theydo take after take withonly slight variations inquality and energy. The Beach Boys worked HARDon these sessions, andtheir dedicationshows. That beingsaid, after a few listensto take after take of'Surfin' or 'Luau'and Iwas about ready to pull myears off. Thisreally is a release aimedat hard-core fans andscholars - theilluminating notes byMurphy are invaluable infleshing out the events ofthis session, and forthose who have been hopingto get a full listen atthe Hite and DorindaMorgan sessions, here theyare - casual fans shouldlook elsewhere.Surfin' SafariCapitol T-1808LP, CDP 7 93691 2 CD;Released October, 19621.'

'The Shift'(Brian Wilson/MikeLove) – 1:52REVIEW:This firsteffort from the Beach Boysis full of youthful charm, and contains a couple ofsurf-genre classics in theform of the boppin'Surfin',' the revved-upracing sounds of '409' andthe pure camp of 'Surfin'Safari'.
Otherfavorites of mine include'Little Girl (You're MyMiss America)' (featuringan already soulful vocalby Denny), thesound-effects laden'County Fair,' and thesimple, yet catchy 'HeadsYou Win, Tails ILose'. The corn isplenty as well, withnovelty numbers(Chug-A-Lug, Ten LittleIndians, Cuckoo Clock) anda middling surfinstrumental (Moon Dawg)pulling things down.Overall, the albumserves as an excellentreference point of how farand how fast the BeachBoys advanced in writing, production and performancetechniques in a few shortyears. In fact, thereason the album isenjoyable is that theplaying (handled by theBeach Boys) and singingare so ragged, and thesongs so naive, comparedto the super-slickproduction of recentdebuts, that it adds tothe wonder of watchingthem progress onsubsequent albums.

Let's Go Trippin'(Dale)12. Finders Keepers(Love, Wilson)REVIEW:Our boys arecatapulted into thenational spotlight withthe title track, are-working of ChuckBerry's 'Sweet LittleSixteen'. Releasedonly five monthsafter their first album,Brian scrambled to findmaterial to capitalize onthe success of 'Surfin'Safari,' with predictableresults. The title trackis a rock and rollclassic, setting thenation of fire to see andexperience the mythical'California Dream,' butthe true gem on this albumis the haunting, melancholy 'LonelySea,' with it'sslow, rollingaccompianment, and Brian'sincredible solo vocaldelivery giving fans thefirst glimpse of a buddingauteur. Theremainder of the album ishot and cold, the onlyother high points being awonderfully cocky 'ShutDown' (continuing Brian'ssignature style ofbeginning the song with acatchy, full-group harmonytag, before launching intothe verse), and the(eventual) Fleetwood Macconcert staple 'Farmer'sDaughter'.
Fivesongs on the album aresurf instrumentals, mostof which are paleimitations of finer surfbands. Overall, another stepping stone onthe way to much betterthings, but worth hearingfor 'The Lonely Sea.' This album isthe first indispensibleproduct in their catalog, containing several classicsongs, and a giant leapforward in songwriting andproducing skills by BrianWilson, who was alreadybeginning to stretch andbreak from the typicalrock formula.Besides the lovely titletrack (inspired by theDisney song 'When You WishUpon A Star'), there arethe propulsive twins'Catch A Wave,' and'Hawaii,' the cockyswagger of 'Little DeuceCoupe,' and the shy, introspective 'In My Room'('In My Room' is anastoundingly personalcomposition, very unusualfor rock albums at thattime). Even thelesser tracks arecommendable, from thesoaring 'The Surfer Moon,'and Brian soloing on awistful 'Your SummerDream,' to thetestosterone retoric of'Our Car Club' (which hasa difficult, sophisticatedtrack, but is hampered byclumsy lyrics), and thebay-at-the-moon mentalityof 'Surfer's Rule.' The only real clunker is ashabby rewrite of 'SwaneeRiver' into theembarrassing 'South BaySurfer' which is sung withgreat, sloppy gusto, tolittle result.Little DeuceCoupeCapitol ST-1988LP, CDP 7 93693 2 CD;Released October, 19631.LittleDeuce CoupeChristian, Wilson2. Wouldn'tthat make themconcept albums?). Releasedonly thirty days (!!)after their last album, itcontained two songs fromtheir just released'Surfer Girl,'('Little Deuce Coupe' andthe lyrically-challenged,but musically impressive'Our Car Club') plus onetrack each from theirfirst two albums.('409' and 'Shut Down,'respectively) Despite thisobvious padding, the albumstands pretty welltogether, helped a greatdeal by the overridingtheme, not to mentionsumptuous full-groupharmony vocals on 'Balladof Ole' Betsy, and 'AYoung Man is Gone,' plusthe newly written'rah-rah' classic, 'BeTrue To YourSchool.' There isalso the very funny 'No GoShowboat' about a gutlesswonder, a song-documentary'Spirit of America'(detailing the new landspeed record), andfinishing up with one ofmy personal favorites, thealbum closes with thegutsy 'Custom Machine.' Denny's DrumsWilsonREVIEW:Upset at Capitol Recordsfilching two of theirsongs to push a shoddycompilation album(entitled 'Shut Down,' ithad 'stars' like RobertMitchumsinging.(shudder)), TheBeach Boys turned aroundand released Shut DownVol. 2, which containedsome of the best rock 'nroll ever written.' Fun, Fun, Fun,' with it'sgreat lyric andsupercharged delivery, isthe Beach Boys at theircare-free best. Addto this a knockoutdrag-racing classic 'Don'tWorry Baby,' and theheavenly sentiment of'Warmth of the Sun'(written shortly after JFKhad been asassinated), andyou have an album that issure to be potent.Other 'good' tracksinclude a fine cover of'Why Do Fools Fall InLove,' and a gorgeousvocal workout on 'Keep anEye on Summer.'
Unfortunately, the rushedpace at which Brian wascranking out product madethe lesser numbers pale incomparison. 'In theParking Lot' isforgettable, 'Louie Louie'is white-bread (but you canunderstand all of thewords!), a lurching 'ThisCar of Mine' goesabsolutely nowhere, and'Pom Pom Playgirl' is justjuvenile. Count thehits: a punchy 'I GetAround' (the band's first#1 single), thebouncing-xylophoneintroduction of 'AllSummer Long,' (featured inthe closing credits of'American Grafitti' yearsdown the road), asuperlative cover of'Hushabye,' the insistant'faster, faster' thrum of'Little Honda,' an achinglyric on 'Wendy,' also'Girls on the Beach' (withanother inspired, soaring melody), thejuvenile delinquentmentality of 'Drive In,'and the super-cool peerpressure of 'Don't BackDown.' What sparkedsuch fine songcraft is thesudden wake-up call of TheBeatles, who were takingAmerica by storm.Brian Wilson felt animmediate and lastingrivalry between the BeachBoys and the lads fromLiverpool, and in typical'Brian' fashion, he roseto the challenge, withstunning results.Even the filler was good, with a wistful 'We'll RunAway' and the nostalgic(?) rock and roll homage'Do You Remember?' Easy onthe ear.
The onlytracks I tend to skip overare the instrumental (ofcourse) 'Carl's BigChance,' and the blooperreel 'Our FavoriteRecording Sessions.'
